Creative Pause
s
This month, I just want to be honest about the fact that I have been in a creative pause for quite some time. I’m not too worried because I know the creativity will come back to me. It always has before so I don’t see why that would change now, but it can be frustrating when you want to make something or have the vague notion of an idea that lives just out of reach. Like that happiness butterfly, you do have to wait until it comes and settles on your shoulder.
I think my last year was super intense and even though it’s a bit later down the road, a break and some time to just not do things is much needed. I miss experiencing life sometimes because I work quite a bit, which is a blessing, but can sometimes also be a bit of a curse when it comes to balancing it all.
So, what do you do when you’re experiencing a big of a creative lull? My top tips are the following:
Enjoy some newfound free time, guilt free
Read and listen to some new books
Try out some different music
Meet with friends and get out of the house
Watch some new series, perhaps binge a guilty pleasure
Play video games, try new things
Try some other interest areas that you’ve made less time for
Freshen up your space, hang some new decor, declutter and tidy
Wrapped up in short, experience some life outside of making.
Behind the Scenes Ideas
I’ve been thinking a little about what I might like to draw, but I haven’t really had the motivation to act on those ideas yet. For now, I am just collecting these ideas and jotting them down for when I do want to make art.
I think I will be focusing on some of these ideas if you take any inspiration from them:
Non-Fiction Nature Illustration: Things like diagrams and drawings in my own style. I have an idea for the interior of a stump and the creatures and lifeforms that might live within a decaying forest stump.
Astrology Tarot: I still want to continue my series of astrology tarot. I’m working on an aquarius card now since it’s my own personal sign and I’ve done an aquarius piece in the past that I feel needs a revamp and then can be translated into this new tarot project.
Mailfolks: I’ve got this idea from a friend about a mail themed series of illustrations. I don’t want to elaborate too much on what my particular idea is, but I think the idea of post, packages, snail mail and letters could be a fun one to explore in a variety of different ways. Maybe you design a series of greeting cards, maybe you illustrator gorgeous letters with different seasonal themes, maybe it’s a story of someone receiving a lovely piece of post, perhaps it’s a kid opening a monter parcel. The possibilities are definitely there and perhaps endless?
Until March…
Like the actual month, I think I am going to keep this month’s newsletter short and sweet, but I will leave you with some beautiful photos I took during the month of February in hopes of infusing one last dash of inspiration into you all before we chat again next month!
